Lidl is the chief competitor of the similar German discount chain Aldi in several markets. There are Lidl stores in every member state of the European Union as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Lidl also announced that it will open its first store in Ukraine in the future in October 2021, but due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine there was no progress.\

History

In 1932, Josef Schwarz became a partner in Südfrüchte Großhandlung Lidl & Co., a fruit wholesaler, and he developed the company into a general food wholesaler.

In 1977, under his son Dieter Schwarz, the Schwarz-Gruppe began to focus on discount markets, larger supermarkets, and cash and carry wholesale markets. He did not want to use the name Schwarz-Markt (Schwarzmarkt means “black market”) and wanted to use the name of his father’s former business partner, A. Lidl, but legal reasons prevented him from using that name for his discount stores. When he discovered a newspaper article about a painter and retired schoolteacher Ludwig Lidl, he bought the rights to the name from him for 1,000 German marks.

Lidl is part of the Schwarz Group, the fifth-largest retailer in the world with sales of €104.3 billion (2018).

The first Lidl discount store was opened in 1973, copying the Aldi concept. Schwarz rigorously removed merchandise that did not sell from the shelves, and cut costs by keeping the size of the retail outlets as small as possible. By 1977, the Lidl chain comprised 33 discount stores.

Lidl opened its first UK store in 1994. Its grocery market share in the UK was 5.9% in 2019.

Sven Seidel was appointed CEO of the company in March 2014, after the previous CEO Karl-Heinz Holland stepped down.^[10] Holland had served as chief executive since 2008 but left due to undisclosed “unbridgeable” differences over future strategy. Seidel stepped down from his position in February 2017 after Manager Magazin reported he had fallen out of favour with Klaus Gehrig, who has headed the Schwarz Group since 2004. Seidel was succeeded as CEO by Dane Jesper Højer, previously head of Lidl’s international buying operation.^[11]

In June 2015, the company announced it would establish a United States headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.^[12] Lidl has major distribution centers in Mebane, North Carolina, and Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The company initially focused on opening locations in East Coast states, between Pennsylvania and Georgia, and as far west as Ohio. In June 2017, Lidl opened its first stores in the United States in Virginia Beach, Virginia and other mid-Atlantic cities. The company planned to open a total of one hundred U.S. stores by the summer of 2018. In November 2018, Lidl announced plans to acquire 27 Best Market stores in New York and New Jersey. In December 2018, Lidl opened its first location in New York City, in the Staten Island Mall. The company has continued to expand throughout the eastern U.S., with over 100 stores by the end of 2020. In August 2020, Lidl announced that it planned to open up another 50 stores in the U.S. by the end of 2021.

Business model

Like fellow German supermarket Aldi, Lidl has a zero waste,no-frills, “pass-the-savings-to-the-consumer” approach of displaying most products in their original delivery cartons, allowing the customers to take the product directly from the carton. When the carton is empty, it is simply replaced with a full one. Staffing is minimal

In contrast to Aldi, there are generally more branded products offered. Lidl distributes many low-priced gourmet foods by producing each of them in a single European Union country for its whole worldwide chain, but it also sources many local products from the country where the store is located. Like Aldi, Lidl has special weekly offers, and its stock of non-food items often changes with time. In contrast to Aldi, Lidl advertises extensively in its homeland of Germany.

Just as Aldi, Lidl does not play mood music in most countries, including Germany. Exceptions include stores in the United States, Croatia, Spain (not all), Poland and Lithuania. Additionally, in two stores in Denmark music is played as a test. Lidl stores have PA systems for important announcements but do not broadcast commercials.

The Lidl operation in the United Kingdom took a different approach than in Germany, with a focus on marketing and public relations, and providing employee benefits not required by law, including paying the independently verified living wage and offering a staff discount.^[21] Upmarket products were introduced, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. This required significant investment in marketing to produce sales growth but had an effect on Lidl’s logistical operation and pressure on profits. Ronny Gottschlich, who had run Lidl GB for the six years to 2016, was responsible for this approach, which led to friction with head office, due to the cost involved. In September 2016, Gottschlich unexpectedly left and was replaced by the Austrian sales and operations director, German-national Christian Härtnagel.^[22] Lidl continued to have ambitious investment plans in the United Kingdom, ultimately doubling the number of stores to 1,500. In the financial year of 2015, Lidl Great Britain’s revenue from its over 630 stores throughout Britain was £4.7 billion.

Criticism

In 2008, Lidl was accused by journalists of spying on their workers, listening to private phone calls, and sometimes even following them home or to doctor’s appointments.In one instance, an employee’s file was supposedly annotated to note that most of her friends were “drug users”. In another instance, a female worker at a Lidl store in the Czech Republic was allegedly forbidden from using the toilet during working hours. An internal company memo from the incident was made public as part of a court case, in which the company is alleged to have advised management “Female workers who have their periods may go to the toilet now and again, but to enjoy this privilege they should wear a visible headband”. Some trade union activists have compared this behavior to that of American companies which engage in union busting, drawing the comparison to surveillance techniques used to proactively detect and stop union organizing activity within a place of business. Lidl responded to these claims, stating that the surveillance was intended to prevent shoplifting, and to detect “abnormal behavior”.

Other services

In October 2009, Lidl Movies was launched in the United Kingdom, undercutting Tesco DVD Rental, which had previously been the United Kingdom’s cheapest online rental service for DVDs. The service was powered by OutNow DVD Rental. OutNow went into liquidation in October 2011, taking Lidl Movies with it.

In January 2012, Lidl launched bakeries in their stores across Europe. They consist of a small baking area with a number of ovens, together with an area where bread and pastries, such as croissants, are displayed for sale. The bakeries were initially trialed in a limited number of stores, to determine whether there was a demand for freshly baked products in-store.

Have you seen the TV2 program “The Junkfood Experiment”? In short, it is a TV program where we follow four well-known Danes who have agreed to only consume junk food for three weeks. I immediately get a flashback to the American film “Supersize Me” from 2004, where Morgan Spurlock sits down to investigate the consequences of only eating McDonalds food for a month.

A disgrace agenda

As a healthcare professional, I am very surprised that such programs are still broadcast – and produced at all. My first thought is that the participants must have received a good portion of money to participate in this experiment. The program has only one agenda: to shame junk food by talking maximally disparagingly about it and proving that it is very harmful to the body. So it is a scare campaign that should make us feel wrong and ashamed when we eat junk food.

All one-sided diet is unhealthy

But hey – stop right away! For what is it really that makes just a few weeks of junk food have such a big impact on the participants’ state of health? The answer is short and sweet: they do not eat anything else!
It is quite obvious that if you eat food that is so energy dense, ie contains many calories, is rich in fat, salt and sugar and has a low content of vitamins and minerals, then the body will react because it simply lacks nutrition.
How do you think your body would react if we did the experiment: “You can only eat carrots and cucumbers for three weeks”?
Very one-sided diet will always have some kind of consequences for your health. If you live only on carrots and cucumbers, you will lack nutrition in the form of fat and protein, and you will also here in a few weeks notice a big difference in an inappropriate direction.

To trick the brain

In my eyes, the program – or programs like this – creates two major challenges:

1. What happens to us when we watch a program that features junk food?
2. What happens when we shame junk food?

When we humans watch a TV show, an advertisement or walk past the candy shelf in the supermarket, we are affected by it. Our brain is – whether we like it or not – affected / tricked. A small seed is sown, which unfolds in a craving for the seen food, or something reminiscent of it. Tricking the brain can easily be used appropriately e.g. by having fruits and vegetables freely available at home or at work. Where it becomes inappropriate is when it is hyper-tasty foods such as. sweets, chips, chocolate, cakes, etc., we get tricked by.
Try once to notice how much input of hyper-tasty food you get through TV and commercials.

Prohibition gives cravings

Also, try noting, the next time you are in a supermarket, what happens when the smell of freshly baked cake from the bakery hits your nostrils. Or at the checkout line, where the chocolate bars are lined up and the Tivoli bars almost jump up on the strip by themselves. Everything is available and stands out and helps to create a need that we may not have had before we went into the supermarket. Do you have e.g. had a special urge for Shrovetide buns lately? Funny enough, it’s rare that we get the urge for Shrovetide buns on a summer day.
But let’s return to the “Junkfood Experiment”. For what really happens when you start shaming certain foods? It often happens that you automatically think:

1. “From Monday, I can no longer eat ‘dit, dut, dat’, so before I start my new, healthy life, I just have to have extra that I can no longer get.”
   So it pushes for an extra craving where you eat more than you need, maybe even an overeating that leads to bad thoughts about yourself.
2. “I’m an adult, so no one has to decide when I eat junk food.”

So it evokes an inner defiance of being in control of oneself because others do not have to decide what to do. This often also leads to overeating.

But what then?

Yes, what do you do when you want to live a healthy life, but know that you feel like hyper-tasty food, even if you’re trying to walk through the supermarket with blinders on or zapping away from the TV commercials about Kim’s Chips?

Lower your shoulders and breathe – because there is a solution, namely: Eat varied !

” But how do I eat varied ,” you might think? It does not have to be that cumbersome. What you can take advantage of is to eat nutritious, eat fruits and vegetables every day and eat high in fiber. Varied does not mean that you can not eat e.g. the same breakfast every day, but that you should think about not just eating one-sided, as they do in the “Junkfood experiment”.
If you generally eat varied, there is easily room for junk food once in a while. Once you have decided that! When junk food is a hovsa solution, it easily gives a bad conscience, so consider how often it fits into your life and plan when it should be. Then you do not have to put junk food in the corner of shame, but instead look forward to it and eat it with great gusto.

• If you can not tolerate nuts, add any. 1 tbsp. coconut oil
• If you use frozen raspberries, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recommends that you give them a boil for 1 min. Freeze them if necessary. down into ice cube trays afterwards so your smoothie can get cold

Entrance

After about 20 minutes we arrived at the entrance of Mossman Gorge. Since there is a lot of talk about it, we had already expected that we would certainly not be the only ones. You pay a small contribution for the entrance, but this also includes the bus that takes you to Mossman Gorge. You can also walk this part, but given the temperatures and high humidity, we found it more convenient to take the free bus. The route from the entrance to Mossman Gorge is not special either.

Swimming hole

After a short bus ride we arrived at the park. You can walk straight into the rainforest through beautiful footbridges, after which you arrive at a beautiful swimming hole after a few meters. It is therefore quite busy with swimmers here, Australians love this.

We had decided in advance to go hiking and skip swimming, but admiring the swimming spot from the side is also beautiful.

Hike through the rainforest

We always love to hike and especially in places like the tropical rainforest this is a party to do. Completely one with nature, we love it! The hike through the rainforest is 2.4 kilometers, which doesn’t seem long. Nevertheless, it is quite a walk, given the weather conditions and the constant climbing and descending and you regularly stop to spot animals, or to enjoy nature and views.

Rex Creek Suspension Bridge

The start of the hike starts at the Rex Creek Suspension Bridge, a beautiful suspension bridge over the river. The start of an adventurous walk through the lush rainforest. At the first meters we immediately saw a bush turkey (Australian brushturkey) walking around. This one is notable for its bright red head. We were therefore very curious what kind of animals we would spot.

The beginning of the hike consists of beautifully landscaped stairs, which later turns into a paved sandy path.

Fortunately, it was dry during our walk, which makes walking on the trails a lot more pleasant. In rainy weather the paths can be slippery. It’s really bizarre how big some trees in the rainforest are, and especially the roots are impressive to see up close.

Tropical birds can be heard all around you, but it is always a lot more difficult to spot them in the rainforest. You also regularly hear rustling in the bushes, these are often lizards or salamanders that dart away.

cassowary

Here too there is a chance to spot the Cassowary, the most dangerous bird in the world. Although we thought it would be cool to see him in the wild, we also found it exciting. I always have in the back of my mind: as long as you don’t irritate or get in the way animals, they won’t do much against people.

tropical butterflies

Although the Cassowaries, snakes and other reptiles are hiding this day, we were able to enjoy the most beautiful tropical butterflies. Bright blue and bright green butterflies flew above our heads, but also brown ones with beautiful drawings on their wings. But the dragonflies also regularly showed up in this green oasis.

While it was very touristy at the swimming hole, we encountered very few people while hiking. It seemed that people only came for the swimming. It’s a shame, because we wouldn’t have wanted to miss the hike ourselves.

Worth a visit

Although the Mossman Gorge is a well-known and therefore also touristic place, I do recommend visiting it. It is a nice introduction to the rainforest and a wonderful place to be, especially for people who enjoy walking. For a visit to Mossman Gorge you should count 2 to 3 hours.

I personally recommend that you go in the morning, just like us, so that it is not so hot yet. And if you like swimming in nature, you can of course also cool off in the swimming holes. Sunscreen, insect repellent and a headgear are things you should definitely bring to Mossman Gorge.

Best ski resorts Andorra

In the Andorran Pyrenees you will find a handful of beautiful ski areas, in which considerable investments have been made in recent years. In the mountain state there are two valleys with excellent opportunities for winter sports enthusiasts; the Grandvalira and the Vallnord valley. The Grandvalira ski area is by far the largest ski resort in Andorra with over 200 kilometers of contiguous ski slopes. The smaller ski areas Ordino-Arcalis (best off-piste) and Pal Arinsal (many height differences) are both located in the Vallnord valley, but are not connected to each other.

Vallnord-Pal Arinsal – cozy winter sports

Andorra’s most centrally located ski area is Vallnord-Pal Arinsal, just 6 kilometers from the capital Andorra la Vella. In total, the area has 47 different slopes of different levels, resulting in 63 kilometers of groomed slopes between 1,500 meters and 2,560 meters in altitude. There is room for everyone on the long and narrow slopes and it is rarely crowded here even during school holidays.

The ski area is made up of two ski sectors: Pal and Arinsal, spread over the La Massana valley, where the highest peaks in the country can be found. The sector Right on the flanks of the Pic del Cubil (2,364 meters) is the largest and very wooded, with some nice descents through the trees. This sector is connected to the smaller area of ​​Arinsal via a large gondola that takes you to the Pic Negre (2,569 meters) in one go. You can spend the night in Arinsal on the slopes, or in La Massana (Pal). The La Massana gondola takes you to the nearby slopes.

Ski touring is something you really should try here. The skimo trails to natural lookout points offer exceptional views of the northern valleys. Arinsal offers only one very hard skimo route (to Port Negre). Pal has some beautiful and generally less strenuous routes; Verdet, Bec, Pla de la Cot, Serra and Coll de la Botella. Setúria is still difficult. Other recommendations are a snowmobile excursion, a snowshoe hike, a ride on the cable car in La Massana and a dog sledding trip.

Ordino Arcalis – small off-piste paradise

In Ordino Arcalis, a modest 30 kilometers of slopes await winter sports enthusiasts. That may seem small, but the variation in slopes is enormous. There is a nice mix between blue, red and black slopes and there are several winter hiking trails and ski routes in the ski area. Moreover, the off-piste possibilities in this ski area are endless. It is not for nothing that freeride competitions are regularly organized. For off-piste lovers , Ordino Arcalis is the perfect destination because of the snow quality and endless possibilities in the freeride area outside the groomed slopes. Due to its size and structure, Ordino Arcalis is a great family ski area.

You can enjoy ski touring here, but to places where you can easily reach the lift. Yet skimo excursions, snowshoe hikes and snowmobiles will take you to the most remote areas. You will also find a helipad here for heli-skiing from the highest peaks of the resort! Do you want to recover from all the action? A 15-minute drive from Ordino Arcalis you will find Andorra’s Shopping Mile , where you will find the latest trends and the best offers.

Grandvalira – the snow capital of the Pyrenees

For extensive and endless slopes you have to go to the Grandvalira ski area. This is the largest and most famous ski area in the Pyrenees, consisting of seven different villages. Each and every one of them ideal villages to spend your skiing holiday, with a wide choice of hotels and accommodations. Each winter sports village has its own character with associated pluses and minuses.

Canillo is the ideal ski village for beginners, the medieval authentic Encamp is the most accessible village in the ski area and the high Pas de la Casa is perhaps the most lively village full of shops, restaurants, discos, bars, fitness and sauna. The cozy Soldeu offers beautiful slopes in a wooded area, just like the popular El Tarter. Grau Roig is just a big ski station, but in the most untouched nature. What these ski villages have in common is that they offer quick access to the slopes of Grandvalira. Valley descents are possible to the villages of Pas de la Casa, Soldeu and El Tarter. Canillo and Encamp are a bit too low for a valley descent.

Spread over four valleys, there are no fewer than 138 slopes that together provide 210 kilometers of skiing fun. Although you will mainly find long blue and red runs in Grandvalira, there are also a number of challenging black runs. Experienced winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy fantastic ski tours through the vast area, fine off-piste opportunities and various snow parks. The mountain peaks of the area reach above 2,800 meters.

One of the highlights of this area is the mushing activity, a dog sled ride. In the ski area itself you can use a zipline at Canillo. Here you can reach a speed of no less than 80 kilometers per hour. In El Tarter and Grau Roig you can go through the woods with small dog sleds. You can go paragliding in El Tarter and in various places you can go winter hiking with raquettes or rent a snowmobile to view the ski area from a different side.

Adventures off the slopes

True fanatics can also paraglide, heli-ski and ski touring in Andorra. Skimo (the common abbreviation for ski mountaineering in Andorra) can be done in all corners of the principality. You can rent racquets for snowshoeing through the woods, along the signposted trails and even in the nature parks: Sorteny Valley, Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley or the Comapedrosa Valley. Great alternatives are a snowmobile excursion, ice karting in Canillo or (learning to) build an igloo in Grandvalira Mountain Park. One of the highlights in Andorra is the activity ‘mushing’, a dog sled ride. A special place to discover is the Peretol forest in Grandvalira.

Adventure Park Naturland is the only place in the principality with 15 kilometers of cross-country trails. You can also toboggan on the Tobotronc track, the longest alpine slide in the world, climb in the Airtrekk and race on the buggy circuit. At Mon(t) Màgic amusement park, you can go down the Magic Gliss mountain slide or zipline along the 550m zipline.

A 2008 survey of 774 catchment areas at the request of the Ministry of Economy and Finance shows that “for sporting goods, Decathlon is dominant in 92.8% of zones”. This dominant position has the effect of marginalizing its commercial competitors, including independent retailers.
